the work

Whether it’s simple things like bathing, feeding, caring and talking, or more complex tasks like finding foster families for children, the motivation for everything we do is to bring hope. Out of hope comes dignity and out of dignity comes a will to live. People start to re-engage with their communities and when individual lives change, communities can be transformed.

EngageHIV works in three niche areas:
1) promoting HIV and AIDS responses in clusters of local churches;
2) HIV prevention with young people through life skills training and mentoring,
3) working with larger organisations, where practical aspects of the work are supported by secular donors, to ensure that spiritual needs are met and care is truly holistic.

Activities within these areas include:

1. Orphan care
EngageHIV supports orphans and vulnerable children, helping in practical, emotional and spiritual ways. This includes assistance as children cope with their parents being ill and eventually dying.

2. Supporting antiretroviral rollout
Our partners provide nurses and community support workers to help people take the antiretroviral medication correctly and give advice about managing side effects.

3. Prevention and education
EngageHIV supports education and prevention programmes that target children, adolescents and community leaders in particular.

4. Counselling and testing
EngageHIV partners are working to ensure that testing is available to everyone who requests a test in their community. They also provide counselling services and associated support groups.

5. Poverty alleviation
EngageHIV is involved in helping people infected or affected by HIV and AIDS to set up small businesses to provide for themselves and their families.

6. Home-based care
Healthcare systems are overwhelmed by the number of people infected with HIV and that’s why home-based care is so important for people living with HIV in such desperate situations. Support groups also help HIV-positive people to cope with their situation and support and encourage each other.
